The traditional towns of Mallorca, along the coast, across the rolling plain of the island and nestled in the mountains are not simply charming, they’re often amazing.
Wander into a sleepy sunlit plaza and you could discover a fantastic restaurant, traditional or haute cuisine. Luxury designer boutiques nestle side by side with tiendas that haven’t changed for a hundred years. Take a coffee outside a bar and you might be rubbing shoulders with a captain of industry and a local farmer.
And the markets! Most Mallorquin towns have excellent weekly markets for vibrantly fresh local produce, traditional craft, art, antiques and just about anything you can think of.
Our favourite five markets in Mallorca
- Santa Maria – every Sunday and it’s best to go between 10.00 and 13.00.
- Sineu – Wednesdays and packed with tourists in the summer but still a traditional market with everything.
- Pollensa – every Sunday in the square at the Café Español, all around the old town and the new square above the underground parking area. Really buzzing between 10.00 and 12.00.
- Alcudia – twice a week, Sunday and Tuesday, in the main square in the old town.
- Valdemossa – not an especially wonderful Sunday market but another good reason to visit this beautiful, if touristy, town.
