With Christmas around the corner, all of us at RW Mallorca Property Shop have decided to do something different this year…
Instead of buying eachother the usual Christmas gifts, we will give something meaningful to those who really need it…
At this time of year, when surrounded by friends and family enjoying the festivities, it’s all too easy to forget that for some, this reality just isn’t possible. In times of crisis, we need to reach out and help eachother in whatever way possible. In recent months the government support of worthwhile and necessary charities has been cut significantly, threatening the existance of many. For some, these charities can mean the difference between life and death.
For this reason, the team at Mallorca Property Shop are proudly supporting charity ASPANOB (Association of parents of children affected by cancer in the Balearic Islands) this year and we would like to take the opportunity to persuade others to do so too.
Approximately 950-1000 children in Spain (including the Balearics) are diagnosed with cancer each year. Although medical advances have meant that the surivavl rate is improving (now 75% of children diagnosed survive the disease as opposed to 25% in the 1980′s) unfortunately the incidence of childhood cancer is increasing year after year. To discover your child has cancer is one of the most unimaginable traumas a family could ever have to deal with. Alongside the shock, upset and fear, you also have to care for your child, reassure them and stay positive. Unfortuately these emotional and psychological worries are paired with the financial strain of treatment, care, education and more. This is where ASPANOB steps in.
ASPANOB was founded in 1987 by a group of parents who met in order to improve the quality of life for children below the age of 18 suffering with cancer and their families in the Balearic Islands. ASPANOB activities are aimed at helping and giving support to these children and their families, improving the family’s acceptance and way of dealing with the illness, detecting problems and needs within the family and providing the necessary solutions.
ASPANOB focus their efforts within four activity programmes run by its volunteers:
- Psychological support programme
- School support programme
- Social attention service
- Economical aids programme
The voluntary help and goodwill of the general public is essential to ASPANOB to support parents who do not have the power to get through this emotional toll alone.
